“These fragments I have shored against my ruins.”
T.S. Eliot, The Waste Land
“Many buildings, and not only Parthenon, probably look better as ruins.”
Susan Sontag, On Photography
“How to love anything other than the possibility of ruin?”
Jacques Derrida, Memoirs of the Blind: The Self-Portrait and Other Ruins
This blog consists of notes written mainly as reflections on various anthropological readings, of occasional musings, and photographs. As a scholar, I am concentrated primarily on [post-Soviet] ruins and ruination. My fieldwork is in Siberia; you could read more About My Research if you are so inclined.
I am broadly interested in environment and infrastructure and how it shapes and mediates everyday interactions. Contemporary world replete with agencies fascinates me: robots and cyborgs; nonhuman actors (particularly dogs); poetics and politics of self-representation (selfie-taking); construction of digital identities on social media, and circulation of unsettling images and forms.
